WELCOME TO ENRICHMENT ACADEMY

WELCOME TO ENRICHMENT ACADEMY

Enrichment Academy is a unique academic environment. We cater to homeschool students and children preparing to embark into the world of learning. We have experience integrating children with special needs into a small classroom environment. We are a once a week tutorial. We believe that, you, as the parent know the needs of your children and make the best decisions about their personal curriculum. We offer hands on instruction that enhances and extends the curriculum you use at home. Hands-on learning includes educational exploration in the areas of the arts, sciences, language arts, and physical education.

In the 2014/2015 school year, we look forward to providing up to 3  hours of weekly direct instruction from qualified and experienced teachers. Our goal is to provide an active learning environment that inspires the love of life-long learning.

OUR TEACHERS

AMY EGNEW  is the director and founder of Enrichment Academy. She is a 14 year veteran homeschool parent. She has a master’s in Speech Language Pathology. While working as a Speech Therapist, she specialized in learning disorders, autism spectrum disorders, and fluency disorders. She was a lead teacher for a PreK program for children with language disorders at Vanderbilt University’s Bill Wilkerson Center. In addition to her work as an SLP, she has been a curriculum consultant for homeschool parents. Amy has also found many opportunities to share her passion for learning. She has taught at several homeschool co-ops, Out of the Box’s musical theater program, and several parent inservice meetings regarding education. Her knowledge of how children learn and develop has led her to providing a solid educational model that supports homeschooling parents in the community.

JENNIFER LAMOREAUX  is the director of Out of the Box Children’s Theatre in Spring Hill, TN.  She has been the director of summer theater camps for the past 5 years.   She has been a homeschooler for 10 years.  She has a Bachelor’s Degree in Theatre Arts.  She has been teaching in the homeschool community for 14 years with co-ops, private lessons, tutorials, group classes, and enrichment programs.  Jennifer has had the opportunity to mentor new homeschoolers in curriculum choices and scheduling.  She is passionate about bringing the love of learning into her classroom, and works closely with the parents to make sure the student is reaching his or her potential.  She has used the “hands on” approach in much of her curriculum development, and continues to fine tune this unique way of learning.

SHELBY EGNEW is a newly graduated homeschool student. She plans on attending college and majoring in Dance Education and Physical Education as well. She has had experience teaching and assisting with dance and physical education for 5 years already! She is very excited to be joining our staff this year and we look forward to welcoming her as a teacher

TRACIE MICHELSON will be joining us this year to teach the Junior Science Lab: Swimming Creatures. We are excited to welcome her to our staff as well. Tracie is fairly new to the homeschooling community but has plans to homeschool through high school. She has a Bachelor's Degree in Communication Disorders and a Master's Degree in Varying Exceptionalities, with over 10 years of teaching experience.  She has extensive experience working with preschoolers that were diagnosed with Emotional Disorders and Autism.  Most recently, she was one of the coaches for L3G0, a team affiliated with First Lego League.  She is excited to be a part of such an amazing and supportive community and looks forward to sharing her love of teaching within the homeschooling community.

2014/2015 Enrichment Academy Class Descriptions

2014/2015 Enrichment Academy
Class Descriptions

Writing: Movies as Literature Thursdays 9:00-10:00  AGES: 11 and older $40
This complete, one-year literature course was designed to use classic novels that have been made into movies to introduce and study the elements of literary analysis. Student discussions while viewing the movies and composition will accompany each of the movies featured during this course. The course not only provides students the skills needed to dissect different literary aspects of books, it also teaches them to discern underlying messages in movies rather than simply absorbing them. This course offers students the tools they need for developping essay writing and literary analysis. This course (in conjunction with a grammar program at home) can count toward fulfilling the English requirement on high school transcripts  A student workbook is available and may need to be purchased for the class (cost $18).
Junior Science Lab: Swimming Creatures Thursdays 9:00-10:00 AGES: 5-11 $40
This year we will be discovering Swimming Creatures! The class is designed to correspond with Apologia’s Young Explorer Series: Exploring Creation with Zoology 2- Swimming Creatures of the Fifth Day. IT IS NOT REQUIRED TO USE THE APOLOGIA TEXT, but will greatly enhance your child’s learning.  Enrichment Academy classes will complete most of the suggested experiments from the Apologia text plus include additional age appropriate supplemental materials. Parents will receive a guide of what to accomplish in the text and notebook each week to match what will be covered in Enrichment Academy (if you choose to use Apologia’s books). Each student will need to bring items listed on the supply list (Supply list will be provided before classes begin)
Homeschool P. E. and Introductory Health  Thursdays 9:00-10:00 AGES: all ages $20
In this Physical Education class students will learn fun games and activities that will help them in their movement, coordination, and sport skills. A small portion of each class will include a topic on healthy living. We will emphasis fitness and teamwork. This is an inclusive course, so we will not focus on competition. We will learn traditional playground games (such as kickball and soccer) and discuss the meaning of sportsmanship. During the cold winter months, fitness activities will be conducted inside the building and will include a wide range of topics (yoga, line dancing, hip hop, obstacle course building, karate, etc.) The primary goal of this course is to get the kids active and moving for the entire class period. No extra supplies or fees are required for this class.
Hands on History: Ancients  Thursdays 10:00-11:00 AGES 5-11 $40
We want to bring the subject of history alive in this class. By giving kids a hands-on way to experience the fascinating facts of history, they will gain first-hand knowledge of the Ancient World. We will explore Greek Mythology, Romans, Egyptians and much more. This class will be filled with fun stories, facts, biographies, and trivia not usually found in history textbooks as well as cool projects to make and learn from. Each student will need to bring items on a supply list. (The list will be published near the beginning of classes)
Science Lab: Physics of Light and Sound/Geology Thursdays 10:00-11:00 AGES 8-14 $40
This class will be a more advanced lab than the Junior Science Lab. We will cover the physics of light and sound the first semester and Geology the second semester. As a parent, you can decide the curriculum you use at home and we will supplement that curriculum with projects and experiments. The text we will follow is from Great Science Adventures. We will provide a topic guide for the classes, so that you can plan accordingly at home. This should be a really fun lab. The first semester we will learn about the properties of light, how to measure the speed of sound, etc. The second semester we will learn about rocks and earths landforms. We may even get to do some gem mining!  Each student will need to bring items listed on the supply list (Supply list will be provided before classes begin)
Strategy Games: Thursdays 10:00-11:00 AGES 11 and older $20
This class is structured to allow the student to learn how to navigate the world of game play. Good sportsmanship, strategy, and critical thinking are all skills that need practicing. This class will provide an environment to practice these skills. The class will learn specific games and spend a few weeks playing them together. Games will include: card games, board games and group games. This class will provide a structured environment to learn in a fun and creative way. No extra supplies are needed for this class.

Do you love Caldecott Award Winning books? I do! This class is designed to explore the art forms in classic children's literature. We will explore art using several methods: pencil, stencil, chalk, watercolor, paint, prints, etc. While we won't spend time reading these beautiful books, we will spend time with their illustrations.
