Class Descriptions

Emergent Reading Class: Thursdays 9:00-9:30  AGES: 4-7
Learning to read is a developmental process. This class will introduce and reinforce critical emergent reading skills that will help your child develop literacy. Studies have shown there is a connection to early reading skills and academic success in the future. Each class will introduce a new book with extension activities. Follow up activities will be sent home to continue reinforcing emergent reading skills. This class gently introduces your child into a classroom model. But most importantly, it will instill a love for reading books and the excitement that comes with learning to read. No additional fees or materials are required for this class.
Homeschool P.E.  Thursdays 9:00-9:30 ALL AGES
In this Physical Education class students will learn fun games and activities that will help them in their movement, coordination, and sport skills. We will emphasis fitness and teamwork. This is an inclusive course, so we will not focus on competition. We will learn traditional playground games and discuss the meaning of sportsmanship. The primary goal of this course is to get the kids active and moving for the entire 30 minute class period.
Science Lab: Anatomy & Physiology  Thursdays 9:30-10:30 AGES: 11 +
Science Labs are designed to supplement your science study at home. Labs and activities will be modeled after Apologia’s Young Explorer Series in addition to Apologia’s High School Level Anatomy and Physiology. Depending on your child’s academic level, you will be able to follow these curriculums at home and have the Thursday lab coordinate with your curriculum. USING APOLOGIA SCIENCE IS NOT A REQUIREMENT. We will work with any student interested in studying human anatomy. Each student will need to bring items on a supply list. (The supply list will be published near the beginning of classes)
Hands on History: Middle Ages  Thursdays 9:30-10:30 AGES 5-12
We want to bring the subject of history alive in this class. By giving kids a hands-on way to experience the fascinating facts of history, they will gain first-hand knowledge of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. We will explore knights, castles, legends, and much much more. This class will be filled with fun stories, facts, biographies, and trivia not usually found in history textbooks as well as cool projects to make and learn from. Each student will need to bring items on a supply list. (The list will be published near the beginning of classes)
Zoology Junior Science Lab: Thursdays 10:30-11:30 AGES 5-11
This year we will be discovering Flying Creatures! The class is designed to correspond with Apologia’s Young Explorer Series: Exploring Creation with Zoology 1- Flying Creatures of the Fifth Day. IT IS NOT REQUIRED TO USE THE APOLOGIA TEXT, but will greatly enhance your child’s learning.  Enrichment Academy classes will complete most of the suggested experiments from the Apologia text plus include additional age appropriate supplemental materials. Parents will receive a guide of what to accomplish in the text and notebook each week to match what will be covered in Enrichment Academy (if you choose to use Apologia’s books). Each student will need to bring items listed on the supply list (Supply list will be provided before classes begin)
Creative Fantasy Writing: Thursdays 10:30-11:30 AGES 11 and older
This writing approach teaches narrative and descriptive writing that stimulates a student’s creativity and imagination. The students will learn how to create a complete story in the fantasy/adventure genre. Students will be encouraged to use their creativity while learning to generate story ideas, craft compelling characters, develop rich plotlines, and bring their story to fruition.
Passport to Art: Learning Geography thru ArtThursdays 11:30-12:30  AGES 5-12
Students will be connecting geography with art lessons in this course. This approach helps students reinforce knowledge in a concrete way. Combining art with geography adds deeper understanding of the peoples of the world and how they live. Each student will create a geography notebook which will include geographic facts and art projects for the continents of the world. Students will need to bring items listed on the supply list (Supply list will be provided before classes begin)
Speech & Film: Thursdays 11:30-12:30  AGES 12 and older
Speech and Film will be divided into 2 semesters. The Speech class is a semester long class that provides the student with instruction on improving his/her knowledge and skills of oral communication, while providing opportunities to speak before a group. We will also discuss active listening and the learning attributes of this skill.  We will cover the 4 basic types of speeches, and give an introduction to debate.  This is an active class that teaches the student through doing rather than teacher lectures. This class qualifies as a high school elective.
The film class will give students an historical understanding of American film production and a critical perspective from which to view contemporary film. Beginning with the silent films of the 1910’s and continuing through the developments of the early 2000’s, this course will examine Hollywood cinema as an institution: its history, genres, and work as both a cultural form and an industry. Through course readings, class discussions, and viewings, you will develop vocabulary and analytical skills that will allow you to discuss a film within these four contexts: historical, cultural, textual, and technical. This course qualifies as a humanities elective on a high school transcript.
