Class Descriptions for 2012-2013 School Year

Young Grades Class Descriptions
(PreKindergarten -2nd Grade)

Active Music: Thursdays 9:30-10:30 Want to get your kids exploring the world around them in an active, creative way? This is the class. The curriculum is focused on teaching sound awareness, rhythmic patterns, knowledge of musical instruments, and much more. It is a fast moving class that is designed to keep your young student moving and learning at the same time. Children as young as 4 years old will be accepted and the cost is only $35.  No additional fees or materials are required for this class.

Junior Science Lab: Thursdays 10:30-11:30  This year we will be discovering Land Animals! The class is designed to correspond with Apologia’s Young Explorer Series: Exploring Creation with Zoology 3- Land Animals of the Sixth Day. This is not a required textbook, but will greatly enhance your child’s learning. Do not worry if you have not completed Apologia’s Zoology 1 or 2. These texts can be done out of order and, eventually, Enrichment Academy will cover all three books. It is recommended that you purchase the Junior Zoology 3 Notebooking Journal. But, again, it is not required to follow the class. Enrichment Academy classes will do most of the suggested experiments plus additional supplemental material. Parents will receive a guide of what to accomplish in the text and notebook each week to match what will be covered in Enrichment Academy (if you choose to use Apologia’s books). Each student will need to provide a 3-ring binder, one small bag of M&Ms, plastic water bottle, balloon, 2 large zip lock bags, 2 toilet paper rolls, and 2 to 3 metal coat hangers. A general supply wish list will be posted for voluntary contributions.

Adventures with Eric Carle: Thursdays 11:30-12:30 Back by popular demand-a book group for young kids. This year, come and experience a new Eric Carle book every week. While making learning fun, Eric Carle includes many math, science, and repetitive texts to help with reading skills in his books. This class will expand on Eric Carle’s texts and make them come alive for your student. A text or material fee is not required for this class. A small donation of items posted on the wish list would be greatly appreciated.

Middle Grades Class Descriptions
(3rd Grade – 7th grade)

Hands on History: Thursdays 9:30-10:30 We want to bring the subject of history alive in this class. By giving kids a hands-on way to experience the fascinating facts of history, they will gain first-hand knowledge of the two eras of history. The first 16 weeks will focus on the Civil War time period and the second 16 weeks will focus on the WWII time period. Each period of history will be filled with fun stories, facts, biographies, and trivia not usually found in history textbooks as well as cool projects to make and learn from. Each student will need to provide: coffee can or oatmeal box, 2 large rubber bands, old pillowcase (preferably white), 1 ½ gallon milk carton, aluminum foil, 2 quart milk or juice carton, 2 small hand mirrors, 1 manilla file folder, wire hanger, old nylon stocking, clear glass jar, pencil, white sheet of poster board, large plastic container (bleach bottle size), empty tin can, 6 inch piece of wire, foam board, 13 small safety pins, 1 2-inch safety pin, 2 bottles of Elmer’s glue, 2 large ziplock bags, 2 decks of playing cards, egg carton. Other group items will be put on a wishlist for voluntary contributions.

Zoology Lab Science: Thursdays 10:30-11:30 This year we will be discovering Land Animals! It is recommended that you purchase the Zoology 3 Notebooking Journal. But, again, it is not required to follow the class. Enrichment Academy classes will do most of the suggested experiments plus additional age appropriate supplemental material.

Karate & Personal Safety: Thursdays 11:30-12:30 This class will definitely count as P.E.! The instructor is a black belt in karate and has several years' experience teaching children. During class, emphasis will be placed on building self confidence, respect, self-control, and awareness. A uniform is not required. Just make sure your student dresses in loose, comfortable fitting clothes.  Rank advancements are possible and testing fees will be $10 at the time testing is scheduled. The initial white belt will be provided. Rank advancement testing is determined by the instructor and will not exceed three times per school year.  In addition to karate, each student will learn about personal safety and skills needed for protection in dangerous situations.

Older Grades Class Descriptions
(8th Grade – 12th Grade)

Writing the Novel Way:Thursdays 9:30-10:30 Writing the Novel Way uses the complete process of writing in a way that motivates students to want to write. The entire school year will be dedicated to writing a novel. The teacher will be a coach throughout the writing process. Your student will learn skills related to creative writing style, vocabulary, grammar, and mechanics. As with all writing courses, some homework will be required. This course is comprehensive enough to count as an English credit on a high school transcript. Each student will need to bring a 3-ring notebook. No text is required.

American Government and Economics: Thursdays 10:30-11:30 The American Government portion of this class will focus on government from the source of the U.S. Constitution. We will study it clause by clause, providing resources on the Founder’s intent of each clause. The Economics portion of this class will use the text What Ever Happened to Penny Candy? by Richard Maybury. This text is a concise, clear, and fun explanation of economics. Economics will cover topics including: money, origin & history of the dollar, origin & history of the business cycle, inflation, depression, foreign currencies, government’s economic behavior and other skills. Each semester of this course will satisfy the minimum graduation requirements for high school.  No text is required for purchase. Each student will need to provide a 3-ring binder and $5 for copy fees.

Introduction to Film: Thursdays 11:30-12:30 This class will give students an historical understanding of American film production and a critical perspective from which to view contemporary film. Beginning with the silent films of the 1910’s and continuing through the developments of the early 2000’s, this course will examine Hollywood cinema as an institution: its history, genres, and work as both a cultural form and an industry. In addition to gaining a broad historical understanding of film production, we will also focus on individual films. Through course readings, class discussions, and viewings, you will develop vocabulary and analytical skills that will allow you to discuss a film within these four contexts: historical, cultural, textual, and technical. This course qualifies as a humanities elective on a high school transcript.
